People may say what they will about RDJ’s portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, but as a longtime Holmes reader and fan, I find his take on the character to be very poignant.  Look at his eyes - there’s an underlying depth and sadness there that’s apparent in almost every scene, even when there’s overlying comedy.  This is a Holmes who plays the clown as a subterfuge, to make his enemies (and his friends) underestimate him; but he’s actually a formidable, highly dangerous adversary — and a friend who is (as he proved in AGOS) loyal to the death.  This is an intelligent, compelling and worthy Holmes who deserves his place in the Sherlockian pantheon.
